Current Drawing Projects

During a typical school year students come to the art studio for class about 42 times.  We try to make the most of these visits by re-enforcing creative problemsolving skills, introducing students to a variety of art media and process while also connecting to art history, and, most importantly, helping each student excercise his or her own unique creative voice.  Below are just some of the current drawing activities students may be experiencing in the studio in the upcoming months.

Kindergarten

Kindergarteners are working on adding detail to their drawings to heighten their ability to communicate visually. These drawings are lined using permanent marker and painted using tempera cakes.

First Grade

Aminah Robinson is a Columbus artist whose mixed media paintings focus on community and the people and places in her neighborhood.  Students explored her artwork and discussed the important people and places in their own communities. They next created self-portraits and drew their home using markers, payons, fabric, buttons, and thread.

The unusual shape of their paper was inspired by Ms. Robinson's Unwritten Love Letters series.  Both students and parents can check out a permanent exhibit of Aminah Robinson's work at the Columbus Museum of Art http://www.columbusmuseum.org/ and can visit http://aminahsworld.org/  online to explre about this contemporary artist who celebrates the past.

Second Grade

"If" by Sarah Perry is an beautiful picture book that surprises readers and sparks their imagination with questions like "what is fishes were leaves?"  Second Graders learned about juxtaposition (unusual and unexpected combinations) ad created a their own creative "If"s'.  This project also emphasized the role of the illustrator and the importance of communicating an idea using images.

Third Graders

are introduced to metal etching and are challenged to add detail through texture into their drawing process.

Some classes drew inspiration from Zentangles while others learned about the Mexican holiday The Day of the Dead and created their own images based on the traditions and symbols of the celebration.

Fourth graders learned about Pop artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.  These artists drew inspiration from the objects and everyday images around them.  Students used a grid drawing technique to create an image of their shoe, cartoon, or advertistement.  They used chalk to add color to their completed works basing their color choices off of either Roy Lichtenstein (primary colors) or Andy Warhol (bright expressive colors).

Fourth Grade

Fifth graders use Chuck close's grid method to create realistic self portrait drawings.  After identifying the contour within the work students will use high contrast permanent marker and, in some instances will add grey tones using charcoal.
