Ceramics Curriculum

First Grade

First graders will create a slab pocket by rolling out a clay slab then folding it over to create a pocket.  Students will learn about tactile texture and use clay tools to add texture to their pockets.  The ceramic pockets can be used for indoor decoration or outside as bird feeders.

Second Grade

Second graders will create a wish fish by using the pinch pot method.  Students will add lips, eyes, and fins to make their fish original. They will explore texture and develop their own on individual wish fish.  Students use their imagination to dream of wishes as they shake.  The following video is a rough version of the construction of a wish fish.

Kindergarten

Kindergarteners created a wish stone by building two pinch pots and bringing them together by the slip and score method.  A stone in the middle of the wish stone will create a rattle sound when shaken. They will explore texture and develop their own on individual wish stones.  Students use their imagination to dream of wishes as they shake.

Third Grade

Third graders are making ceramic masks.

These masks require students to use a variety of application of clay techniques.  Some students will make the connection to the artist Hundertwasser when glazing their piece.  To see more about Hundertwasser go to the "other media" tab at the top of the page.

Fourth Grade

Fourth graders are building Japanese boxes by starting with a clay cube.  Then they add texture, cut off the top of the box and hollow out the middle.

Fifth Grade

Fifth graders are  building creative containers by starting with a clay slab.  They will exercise their originality by using the skills they have built in kindergarten through 4th grade ceramics studio to create an original vessel exhibiting a unique texture and design.
