Ceramics 1

Objectives:

This course involves exploring the handbuilding methods of working with clay such as coiling, slab building, and also throwing on the wheel. In addition students will study the history of ceramics along with becoming familiar with historical and contemporary ceramicists and their process. Students are encouraged to explore individual styles while producing a diverse body of three-dimensional work.

Stages of Clay

In this lesson students will learn the different stages of clay and how they can be utilized to create form and function.

Tryptic Tiles

Student will create tryptic tiles that utilize a common color approach, harmonious textures that have variety in locations.

Sgraffito

Sgraffito is a decorative technique that creates design by scratching away a top layer of material to reveal a different colored layer underneath.

Throwing

Throwing on the wheel is a ceramic art form where a potter uses a spinning pottery wheel to shape wet clay into a desired form, such as bowls, vases, or cups.

Coil Pots

Create a coil pot using the coiling technique, where clay is rolled into long, rope-like strands (coils) and then stacked and joined on top of each other to build the vessel.
