Soft Kut Block Printing

Art history correlation

Students will be exposed to the work of two print masters, M.C. Escher and Hokusai.

Finding an inspiration

Students will create  three sketches that could be used as  suitable subjects for printmaking.

Transferring the image  and removing the light

Students will transfer their image as a mirror image to their printing block and will use linoleum block carving tools to remove the light areas of the subject.

Inking the block

Students will use a printmaking station to ink their block.  They may choose to mix inks or create a treated surface on the paper that they print onto.  Students at Valley have been working in printmaking stations since kindergarten.  Using the base knowledge they have gathered they are allowed to explore and push their creativity.

Gathering the edition and adding a credit line

Students will choose their three most powerful prints to go into their art space for the final Spring show.  These works will exhibit a credit line that identifies the artist, title, and edition number written in pencil, just as a professional printmaker would credit his or her print edition.
